OpenCoF: Teaching AI to Reason by Generating Videos
Xinyan Chen, Ziyu Guo, Renrui Zhang, Dongzhi Jiang, Hongsheng Li · July 9, 2026
A new approach called Chain-of-Frame (CoF) reasoning lets AI models think through a sequence of video frames instead of text. Researchers created OpenCoF, a framework with a dataset of 17,000 reasoning videos across 11 tasks, and fine-tuned a video model called Wan-CoF. Results show it outperforms baseline models on video reasoning benchmarks. They also added visual and textual reasoning tokens to help the model track low-level visual details and high-level semantic concepts. This suggests that for complex reasoning, AI benefits from both broad temporal training and explicit intermediate reasoning states. The work is open-sourced to encourage further research.
